Nithi Weir project

The UFFCA is managing the Nithi Weir, which creates live water storage for adequate flows to prevent dewatering, improve fish habitat, and support fish passage in the Nithi River.

Initially managed by the Carrier Sekani Tribal Council and then by the Province of BC, the Nithi weir was not maintained for nearly 20 years. Even without active management, it was successful in holding back water, helping to moderate flows and stabilize downstream fish habitat. In 2018-19, the UFFCA worked to conduct habitat assessments, clear log jams and fish barriers, set up water monitoring stations, and restore function of the weir to be used as a powerful tool for drought management. The UFFCA developed a Nithi weir management plan based on high quality data from the Nechako/Upper Fraser water quality and quantity monitoring program and Upper Fraser First Nations fish values.
